Our History

In 1863, the federal government granted a section of land to the Wright County Board of Supervisors. Decades later, Duane Young (no relation to the current owners) built the Bank of Clarion on a portion of that land. That building is now the home of Wright County Insurance!

In 1936, the building was sold to The First National Bank.

Sumners Insurance Store Front
In June 1890, a group of 107 Wright County farmers signed their first applications for insurance on their buildings and personal property, and the Farmers Mutual Insurance Association of Wright County was formed. The Association’s office was located above the Crowe Clothing Store on the corner of Highway 3 and Main Street. Initially, only fire and lightning were covered. At the end of each year, losses were calculated and assessed across all policyholders. In later years, windstorm coverage was added, and policyholders began paying premiums in advance rather than after a loss.

In 1934, Harry Sumners founded Sumners Insurance Agency to operate alongside the Farmers Mutual Insurance Association. After his death in 1955, his second son, Harold K. Sumners, took over ownership.

In 1959, First National Bank moved into a new building, and the Farmers Mutual Insurance Association purchased and moved into the location Wright County Insurance is still in today.

In 1961, Harold's son Roger took over the agency.
Drawing of Iowa
In 1965, the Association changed its name to Wright County Farmers Mutual Insurance Association.

In 1983, Wright County Farmers Mutual Insurance Association merged into Central Iowa Mutual Insurance of Roland, Iowa — later Farmers Mutual Hail.

In 1996, Roger and Margaret Sumners sold Sumners Insurance Agency to Bud Young, who had been with the agency since 1982.
Office before and after remodel
In 2017, Bud’s son, Andy Young, became the fifth-generation owner. Bud officially retired in 2023.

In May 2022, the building was completely renovated, featuring high ceilings, a bright atmosphere, and many restored original architectural details — including the original bank vault door!

In 2025, Sumners Insurance Agency was renamed Wright County Insurance, hearkening back to the business’s roots.

We are grateful to continue a strong legacy of supporting our clients and our communities — especially in their greatest times of need.
